The Laboratory of Anthropology houses a unique special collections and research library dedicated to the study of Native cultures, as well as anthropological and archaeological research of the Southwest. The collection features the personal library of archaeologist, Sylvanus G. Morley, highlighting the archaeology, history, and cultures of Mesoamerica. The library's holdings of over 30,000 volumes include archaeological reports, ethnographic studies, professional journals, dissertations, unpublished reports, and ephemera. Members of the public are welcome. Due to the specialized nature of the collection, library materials are non-circulating and the book stacks are closed to the public. The Laboratory of Anthropology Library will consider interlibrary loan requests on a case-by-case basis.

Services Available

  • Automated catalog & Native American Artist database
  • Reference and research assistance. For in-depth research, please make an appointment in advance.

The Laboratory of Anthropology Library is funded through an annual book sale held in September, and through generous community support. Donations of all non-fiction, literature of the Southwest, and hardback fiction in good condition are accepted January through late August. If considering making a donation or interested in volunteer opportunities in the library, please call Michelle at (505) 476-1264 or email michelle.garcia@state.nm.us.
