Pushing Tradition

A tradition, because it is perpetuated by people who practice it, is constantly evolving. Maria understood where the boundaries of tradition ended and radical non-Pueblo began, and she was able to remain innovative, yet still be a San Ildefonso potter. Throughout her career, she continued to push tradition, because she recognized its reward. The result was continued experiments in finishes, firing techniques, and post-firing modifications.

Many contemporary artists have continued to push Pueblo pottery traditions. Some have refined various techniques first conceived by Maria, and others have experimented on their own. The result is the evolution of tradition and the creation of works of art.
