Laboratory of Anthropology Library
About
The Laboratory of Anthropology Library (LOA Library) is a non-circulating research library dedicated to the study of Native cultures, anthropology and archaeology of the Southwestern United States, Mexico and Central America, with the concentration of its holdings on the greater Southwest of the United States.
The LOA Library holdings include: monographs, periodicals, archaeological reports, ethnographic studies, professional journals, dissertations, unpublished reports, and ephemera related to the archaeology, ethnology, ethnobotany, history, material culture, religion, mythology, folklore, languages, literature and arts of the Native peoples of the greater Southewst.
Notable amongst the special collections holdings of the LOA Library is the personal library of the renowned American archaeologist / Mayanist Sylvanus Griswold Morley (June 7, 1883 – September 2, 1948).
Access Policy
While the majority of the researchers utilizing the LOA Library are scholars, archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, members of the public are welcomed.
The LOA Library is available to the public Monday through Friday 1 - 5:00 pm, unless otherwise posted. Due to the specialized nature of the collections and the collections being closed stacks and non-circulating requiring staff to pull all materials for each research using the collections, appointments are strongly encouraged. A photocopier is available for researchers to make copies.
All functions of the Library are carried out by one FTE Librarian and is closed when the Librarian is ill or is on vacation. See the section below on planned closures.
