Summer of Baskets: Demonstrations and Workshops

JUNE 18, 2012

In conjunction with the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s exhibition Woven Identities: Basketry Art from the Collections a series of basketry programming is offered over the course of three weekends this summer; June 23 and 24, July 7 and 8, and August 4 and 5.

Workshops run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the MIAC classroom, with an hour break for lunch. Lunch is not provided, please plan to bring your own lunch or purchase one from Museum Hill Café during the break. Cost is $25 per person or $15 for youth and students (ages 10 and over). Space is limited and preregistration is required.  Please call 505-982-5057 for tickets or purchase in person at the MIAC gift shop. The public may call 505-476-1271 for more information.

Demonstrations are free with museum admission. Museum admission for Sunday demonstrations is FREE to New Mexico residents and children under 17.

Workshop

Saturday, June 23

10 am. to 3 p.m.

Basketry artists, Patty Wells and Kaitlyn Kayquoptewa mother and daughter basket makers (Hopi), will lead a full-day family workshop on Hopi plaited yucca baskets on Saturday.

Sunday, June 24

Noon to 4:30 p.m.

Free public demonstration in the Woven Identities exhibition gallery.

JULY

Trunk Show and Sale

Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Indian art expert Terry DeWald’s Trunk Show & Sale will feature Indian baskets from the Southwest and California, and Navajo saddle blankets in conjunction with the two exhibitions currently on view at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture; Woven Identities and They Wove for Horses. Free with admission.

Demonstration

Saturday, July 7

Noon to 4:30 p.m.

This demonstration features Native artists Terrol Dew Johnson (Tohono O’odham), an award-winning basket maker, teacher, and activist who also co-founded and directs a cultural revitalization program; and, Loa Balumnaech Ryan (Tsimshian), also an award winning basket maker, teacher and cultural educator, in the Woven Identities gallery.Free with admission.

Panel Presentation and Demonstrations

Sunday, July 8 

2 to 4:30 p.m.

Indian basket expert Terry DeWald will lead a discussion with international master basket weavers from Arizona, the North West Coast, Panama, and South Africa.Free with admission.

AUGUST

Workshop

Saturday, August 4

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Basketry artist and knowledge-holder Royce Manuel (Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community) will lead a full-day workshop on Saturday entitled "Binding Our Future to the Past: Agave Workshop.” Mr. Manuel has worked to bring the Kiaha (traditional burden basket) back to life for the Aw-Thum and shared his knowledge teaching community workshops.

Sunday, August 5

Noon to 4:30 p.m.

Royce Manuel will demonstrate his basket making techniques in the Woven Identities exhibition gallery. Free with admission.
